EPB SA's Hombisa Promoted to Plantation Manager

16th July 2013

Hombisa Sonti joined EcoPlanet Bamboo a year ago as EPB SA's Nursery Manager and Community Relations Officer.

During this time she attended to the care and development of more than 100,000 Bambusa balcooa plantlets and Oxytenanthera abyssinica seedlings and established strong relations with the local communities. As time progressed Hombisa steadily took on greater responsibility within the plantation operations, and took a leadership role within the development of the farm's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system to focus on the use of organic methods to ward off pests.

Much of Hombisa's success thus far is due to her hard work and determination, and she demonstrates the ability and desire required to fuel her professional growth. Hombisa's dedication to EcoPlanet Bamboo's philosophy - to create both social and environmental impact while generating financial returns - makes her perfect for this leadership role at Kowie Bamboo Farm. The EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa team is pleased to promote Hombisa to Plantation Manager.

Hombisa's promotion demonstrates one of EcoPlanet Bamboo's core philosophies in action: with hard work and dedication anything is possible, no matter where you come from. Hombisa grew up as one of 7 sisters in an Eastern Cape village. Her parents struggled to pay her school fees, but despite the hardships, Hombisa understood the value of education. She became the first person in her family to attend university, and she later earned a master's degree.
