EcoPlanet Bamboo's 2016 World Bamboo Day

20th September 2016

EcoPlanet Bamboo utilizes its annual World Bamboo Day celebrations to provide a deeper understanding of the company's bamboo based mission, through a day designed around educational games, presentations and events.

EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa utilized the 2016 World Bamboo Day as an opportunity to provide the company's plantation focused employees with access to EcoPlanet Core Carbon and EPB Laboratories, as the first year in which the company has full manufacturing and processing operational.

The event was opened with a prayer. EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa General Manager Samantha Wilde welcomed everyone and kicked the day off with a series of health talks and the importance of early testing for a range of common ailments.

EcoPlanet Bamboo's Assistant Plantation Manager then did an environmental awareness presentation to educate the attendees on the effects of human activity on the biophysical environment. The unsustainable use of ecosystems has led to its degradation and reduce the capacity to carry out its ecological services and this is threatening human livelihoods and health. Human activities have greater effects on the planet as it can cause ecosystem imbalances and changes in climate. Sustainable use of the biophysical environment can be achieved by the elimination of habitat destruction, pollution and alien invasive plants. EcoPlanet Bamboo emphasized that certification bodies like Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) can be used to guide people and companies on the proper use of natural resources. He highlighted all EcoPlanet Bamboo Group policies and standard operating procedures designed to ensure that the company maintains the strictest environmental standards.

During the afternoon the participants engaged in presentations around the EcoPlanet Core Carbon manufacturing facility and the benefits of bamboo as a sustainable feedstock for carbonized products including lump charcoal, shisha (hookah) charcoal and activated carbon.

The Mama’s (ladies) from EcoPlanet's Kowie Bamboo Farm community entertained the crowd with music and dancing.

And of course no World Bamboo Day would be complete without a range of bamboo-centric games and associated prizes!
