EcoPlanet Bamboo Straws Campaign
9th May 2018
A few months ago EcoPlanet Bamboo launched a Bamboo Straws Campaign, targeting the disbursement of an initial 25,000 reusable yet fully compostable bamboo straws. This campaign is now well underway, with our bamboo straws having reached happy clients across five continents. With the average person in the United States using upwards of 600 straws per year, each re-usable bamboo straw can have quite a cumulative positive impact in reducing the footprint of plastic straws within local environments, including beaches, rivers, oceans. Just 10,000 bamboo straws each re-used for a year, whether from EcoPlanet Bamboo or elsewhere, can result in a reduction in 6 million straws from entering our environment!
EcoPlanet Bamboo's main focus and objective is to provide a tree-free, deforestation-free alternative to major global industries, with an initial focus on the pulp and paper industry, thereby reducing deforestation while also assisting in the restoration of forested lands in some of the most degraded parts of the planet. While bamboo straws are a deviation from this core focus, they provide a quick and easy win for the environment, particularly as the anti-single use plastic movement gains momentum.
Bamboo straws have many advantages over other non-plastic alternatives. Carefully selected, harvested, cleaned and steam treated at high temperature to remove the high sugar content of the bamboo, allows the straws to be used for extended periods, while being cleaned either by hand or in a dishwasher.
With an initial focus on Southern Africa, it has been fantastic to watch as more and more restaurants, cafes, hotels and others have made the statement of going against plastic straws. Although this is only one tiny step in the fight against plastic, and in EcoPlanet Bamboo's mission to provide a range of sustainable alternative products, every step towards a cleaner, greener world counts!
