EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa Supports School Construction
10th October 2013
As part of its community outreach efforts, EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa (EPB SA) partnered with Comfort Ministries, a local faith-based organization, on several small construction projects at Wilson’s Party primary school.
In July, a group of Americans volunteered with Comfort Ministries in South Africa on several projects at Wilson’s Party, the school many staff children attend, using materials donated by EPB Southern Africa. The volunteers helped with several tasks, from fixing the gutters and cleaning water tanks to painting walls and installing chalkboards.
The Government of South Africa plans to consolidate three local schools in 2014, with all children attending Wilson’s Party in the future. However, Wilson’s Party lacked the classroom capacity to accommodate the increase in students. To solve this dilemma, the volunteers constructed dividers that transformed large classrooms into two smaller classrooms.
At the conclusion of the volunteer week, Comfort Ministries and EPB Southern Africa hosted a banquet for the volunteers and local community members, including Wilson’s Party teachers and students.
EPB SA partners with Comfort Ministries throughout the year on various community activities, including on raising awareness about the benefits of bamboo at events such as World Bamboo Day celebrations. Comfort Ministries has worked in the communities surrounding Kowie Bamboo Farm for over twenty years.< Back to news < Download article
