EcoPlanet Bamboo at the Climate Leadership Gala
10th May 2017
The Climate Leadership Gala is an annual event held in Washington DC that aims to Gala bring together 350 leaders within various sectors of business, industry, government and the NGO community in order to celebrate current achievements and lead the path to a post-carbon future. Each year a number of awards are dedicated towards individuals who have achieved significant strides towards a better environmental and climate centric future.
The 2017 event honored Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever with the Climate Visionary Award. Mr Polman's speech highlighted the need for private sector and business to drive markets and consumers towards sustainability. These words were echoed by Sheldon Whitehouse, the Senator from Rhode Island, whom has been a staunch advocate for climate change. Senator Whitehouse remarked "the silence in confress on climate change from corporate America is deafening".
These words are particularly meaningful to EcoPlanet Bamboo, given that all of our plantations and manufacturing operations have been designed to provide maximum climate change benefits. For our plantation operations this contribution to the fight against global climate change comes in two ways - firstly by avoiding deforestation through the provision of a tree free, deforestation free alternative fiber for timber manufacturing industries, and secondly by sequestering and storing large volumes of atmospheric carbon dioxide. These sequestration benefits have been verified by the Rainforest Alliance under the Verified Carbon Standard for EcoPlanet Bamboo's Nicaragua bamboo plantations.
In addition to the Climate Leadership Awards, the 2017 Women and the Green Economy (WAGE) Leadership Award was presented to Nora Pouillon, chef, author and owner of Restaurant Nora, America’s first certified organic restaurant.
The Climate Leadership Gala is organized by the Earth Day Network. EcoPlanet Bamboo's CEO, Troy Wiseman is on the Board of Directors of Earth Day Network, and is an active driver of the movement's key mission to provide environmental literarcy to children and youth across the world.
