Driving Positive Social Change
6th July 2012
As a triple bottom line company, EcoPlanet Bamboo is constantly seeking new ways to promote development in the communities surrounding our bamboo plantations.
Through socially responsible policies, sustainable business practices and training programs, EcoPlanet Bamboo ensures that we are driving positive change in the communities surrounding our bamboo operations.
At our Guadua bamboo plantations at EcoPlanet Bamboo Central America, we have engaged our employees in a number of training programs to enhance their quality of life. These trainings include skill development workshops, safety trainings as well as literacy classes.
For example, over the past few months EcoPlanet Bamboo CA has had Luis Prado, a well known Colombia bamboo artisan, on our Nicaraguan bamboo plantations training a team of our staff on bamboo handicrafts. We hope that this knowledge will be transferred from the staff team into our surrounding communities, and stimulate the development of a range of locally owned and run SME's, creating a thriving bamboo community, and fueling stagnant local economies.
Furthermore, at EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa, we’ve made a commitment to maximize social impact of families living within our farm. Nine families have been given the right to live on our African bamboo plantation, with houses, electricity, water and areas for grazing livestock being provided. Our Southern African operations have also provided valuable employment within a region that suffers more than 90% unemployment.
EcoPlanet Bamboo believes the only way to truly have lasting impact is to help people to help themselves through the provision of stable employment and trainings. We are committed to giving people a hand up rather than a hand out.< Back to news < Download article
