Creating Opportunities for Women
25th July 2012
EcoPlanet Bamboo is fully committed to improving lives through the adoption of socially responsible policies that reduce poverty by improving livelihoods and maximizing positive change.
As part of our Company Social Impact Policy, EcoPlanet Bamboo is committed to ensuring that equal opportunity employment exists, regardless of gender, religion, physical and/or mental disabilities, or political inclination. In addition, we are committed to hiring a minimum of 25% women in all of our operations.
Approximately 70% of the world’s poor and over 65% of the world’s illiterate are women, and rural poverty accounts for nearly 63% of poverty worldwide, reaching 95% in sub-Saharan Africa. General population trends predict that the total number of poor rural women will increase as a result of lack of money, social roles and responsibilities, and lack of alternative livelihoods. Employment provided by EcoPlanet Bamboo operations empowers women and provides them greater independence, and thus creates positive social change for them and their families.
At EcoPlanet Bamboo Southern Africa, our workforce has recently been joined by 6 women who work in our Kowie Bamboo Farm nursery and tend to our African Bamboo plantlets. In an area where 90% of the population is dependent on government grants and subsidies, EcoPlanet Bamboo’s employment opportunities empower women and communities, giving them a hand up rather than a hand out.< Back to news < Download article
